What does EXT. (Exterior) mean?

EXT. (Exterior) is a screenwriting abbreviation used to indicate that a scene takes place outside, in an open or outdoor setting. This notation helps directors, cinematographers, and production crews prepare for the specific challenges of shooting in exterior locations, such as lighting, weather, and sound. “EXT.” is typically paired with a location description, such as “EXT. PARK – DAY,” giving the crew a clear understanding of where and when the scene will occur.

Example:The script reads “EXT. BEACH – SUNSET,” indicating that the scene will take place on a beach during the evening with natural light from the setting sun.
Example: “EXT. FOREST – NIGHT” in a screenplay tells the production crew that they will need to prepare for a nighttime shoot in an outdoor location, likely requiring additional lighting and equipment.
