What does Antagonist mean?

Antagonist refers to the character in a story who opposes the protagonist, often serving as the main source of conflict. The antagonist is typically in direct opposition to the goals of the protagonist, creating tension and driving the plot forward. In some stories, the antagonist is not a person but rather a force, such as nature, society, or an internal struggle within the protagonist.

Example:In the film The Dark Knight, the Joker serves as the antagonist, creating chaos and challenging Batman’s sense of justice.
Example: In Moby-Dick, Captain Ahab’s antagonist is the white whale, which represents both an external and internal conflict for the protagonist.

Not all antagonists are villains! Some antagonists simply have goals or values that conflict with the protagonist, even if they aren’t inherently evil.
