What does First Positions mean?

First Positions refers to the starting places where actors or extras are required to stand or begin their movements at the start of a scene. “First positions” are typically called out by the assistant director before filming begins to ensure that everyone is in the correct spot for the scene’s initial take. This is an important part of the filmmaking process, as it ensures continuity and smooth transitions between takes, making sure that actors are always in the right place to match previous shots.

Example:The assistant director calls “First positions!” to the actors before starting a new take, ensuring everyone is in the correct spot for the scene’s opening shot.
Example: An extra is asked to return to their first position after a scene is reset, maintaining continuity for the next take.
