What does Boom Operator mean?

Boom Operator refers to the crew member responsible for holding and positioning the boom mic on set. The boom operator ensures that the microphone is placed as close as possible to the actors or source of sound without entering the camera’s frame. This role requires coordination, precision, and stamina, as boom operators often have to adjust their positioning quickly based on the movement of the actors or changes in camera angles. They work closely with the sound department to ensure high-quality audio capture.

Example:The boom operator holds the boom pole above the actors during an intense dialogue scene, making sure the microphone is close enough to capture every word.
