Age Discrimination

What does Age Discrimination mean?

Age Discrimination refers to treating an individual unfairly or less favorably due to their age, often in the context of employment, hiring, or casting in the entertainment industry. Age discrimination laws, such as the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) in the U.S., are designed to protect workers over 40 from being treated unfairly based on their age. In the entertainment industry, age discrimination can occur when older or younger performers are unfairly passed over for roles based on their age, rather than their talent or suitability for the role.

Example:An actor in their 50s is passed over for a role because the producers are looking for a younger actor, despite the older actor being better suited for the role.
Example: An older actress files an age discrimination lawsuit after being denied a part in a TV series due to her age, despite meeting all the other qualifications.

Did you know?
Age discrimination isn’t just about older workers! In the entertainment industry, younger actors can also face discrimination when casting directors prefer older actors to play younger roles.
