What does Option Agreement mean?

Option Agreement is a contract in which a producer or studio pays a writer, author, or creator a fee to “option” the rights to their work for a set period of time. During this period, the producer has the exclusive right to develop the work into a film, TV series, or other entertainment project, but is not obligated to proceed with production. If the producer decides to move forward, they will “exercise the option” and purchase the full rights to the material. For example, a production company may option a book with plans to adapt it into a movie.

Example:The producer signed an option agreement with the author, securing the exclusive rights to adapt the book into a feature film.
Example: A studio optioned a script for a potential TV series, giving them time to develop and secure funding before deciding whether to move forward with production.
