What does In Perpetuity mean?

In Perpetuity refers to usage rights that are granted indefinitely. When a contract specifies that something can be used “in perpetuity,” it means that the performance, image, or intellectual property can be used forever, without the need for renewal or additional compensation. This is a common term in entertainment contracts, particularly in advertising, where companies seek to secure permanent rights to a commercial or campaign without paying for continued usage. However, it can limit the performer”s ability to control how their work is used long-term.

Example:A model signed a contract granting the use of their image in perpetuity for a print ad campaign, meaning the ad can be used indefinitely without further compensation.
Example: An actor agreed to in-perpetuity usage for a commercial, allowing the company to continue airing the ad without paying additional residuals.
