What does First Look Deal mean?

First Look Deal is an agreement between a production company or individual filmmaker and a studio, where the studio gets the first opportunity to review and potentially acquire any new projects. In exchange, the production company typically receives financial backing or development funds. If the studio passes on the project, the production company is free to shop it around to other studios. For example, many top directors and producers have first look deals with major studios, giving them access to resources while the studio gains early access to potential hit projects.

Example:The filmmaker signed a first look deal with a major studio, ensuring that the studio would get the first chance to produce any of their new projects.
Example: The producer’s first look deal provided them with development funding in exchange for the studio’s first right of refusal on any future films.
