What does SAG-AFTRA mean?

SAG-AFTRA is the largest union representing film, television, radio, and digital media performers in the U.S. It was formed in 2012 after the merger of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA). The union negotiates and enforces contracts that provide members with fair wages, residuals, health and pension benefits, and safe working conditions. SAG-AFTRA represents actors, stunt performers, dancers, broadcasters, and voiceover artists, ensuring protections across various entertainment sectors.

SAG-AFTRA plays a crucial role in advocating for performers’ rights, setting industry standards for pay, working hours, and safety on set. It ensures that its members receive compensation not just for initial performances but also for reruns, syndication, and digital distribution through residuals.

Example:An actor receives residuals for years after a hit TV series, thanks to SAG-AFTRA’s agreements for reruns and streaming platforms.
Example: A voiceover artist in a video game is guaranteed fair pay and health benefits under SAG-AFTRA’s Interactive Media Agreement.
