What does Non-Union mean?

Non-Union refers to an actor, crew member, or production that is not affiliated with a labor union, such as SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) or IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees). Non-union workers may not have the same protections or benefits as union members, such as minimum wage rates, healthcare, or pension plans. Non-union productions are often lower-budget and may hire actors or crew members without requiring union affiliation. Related terms include Union, which represents workers through collective bargaining.

Example:The independent film is a non-union production, which allows the producers to hire actors without union membership requirements.
Example: A non-union actor accepts the role, knowing they won’t receive the same benefits as union actors, but valuing the opportunity for experience.
