What does Cold Read mean?

Cold Read refers to an audition technique where an actor is given a script with little to no time to rehearse or prepare before performing. This technique is used to assess the actor’s ability to think on their feet, quickly understand the material, and deliver a performance. Cold reads are common during initial auditions and callbacks, and they test an actor’s adaptability and natural instincts for a role.

Example:An actor attends an audition where they are asked to perform a cold read from a scene they’ve never seen before, relying on their improvisational skills.
Example: At a callback, the casting director gives an actor new sides for a cold read, testing their ability to take immediate direction.
