What does Holding Area mean?

Holding Area refers to the designated area where actors or extras wait between scenes or shots while on set. Holding areas are typically located away from the main filming area and provide seating, refreshments, and sometimes entertainment for the talent. “Holding” is a common term used by assistant directors and production assistants when instructing actors or extras to wait until they are needed. It ensures that talent is easily accessible but not disrupting the main action on set.

Example:Extras are instructed to wait in the holding area between takes until they are called to set for the next scene.
Example: The lead actor relaxes in holding while the crew resets the cameras and lighting for the next shot.
